Sonntagsspaziergang rund ums Dichterhäuschen - Sunday walk around the little poet house

It's  end of February and winter in Germany shows now its coldest side. Now we got it - the Siberian frostiness!

Together with the frost sun is finally coming out again. Whenever I take a walk outside I am  every time surprised how different the intensity of the sun exposure melts snow and ice on fields, paths and in the forest away.

The sunny weather finally draws me out in the garden and I discover on hidden places,  partially still  buried in the snow, the first pre-spring bloomers: Snow drops, crocuses, helleborus and daffodils peek outside. Even chives sprouts out.

Our age-worn little bird-feed house is controlled by starlings. How good that all the little ones can still their hunger next to it.

Like every morning the dog first gets its 30 to 60 minutes standard dog walk, depending on weather, time and my mood. Destination today is again the little poet house (45 minutes back and forth). Fortunately most of the paths in this part of the forest are nearly snow and ice free now.

This is how the little poet house looks like! You want to know why a poet house stands here in the middle of the forest? Maybe I tell you anywhen in another post.

From the poet house we could catch a glimpse to the castle on the opposite side - but unfortunately not today.

Inside the little poet house  there are some inspiring poems to read.

"An die Muse"
" To the muse"

Because the sun is shining so nice we decide - me and Mia, my dog - not to turn around now, but to keep walking. Below the poet house is another path. There I want to go and if possible over the shortest possible path.

It's convenient for me that the wood cutters  made a new swath down the forest.

Aufgeräumt wurde hier noch nicht ganz. Aber Umkehren ist jetzt keine Option!
There is still something to clear up. But to turn around is no option now!

From the edge of the forest we have a good view over the surrounding Hassberge landscape.

Ein Wochenendhäuschen in Alleinlage am Waldesrand mit Weitsicht.
A little weekend home in standalone location at the edge of the forest including foresight.

After we walked around weekend home and hunter stand we get to that path which leads below the poet house. From here you can also make out the castle. Castle and little poet house have a common history which I won't tell now.

Blick nach oben zum Dichterhaus
View upwards to the poet house

Our way home leads through that trail into the woods again.

I hope you enjoyed to accompany us on this walk around the little poet house.

Sommerausflug zu Stuttgart's Wilhelma - Summer trip to Stuttgart's Wilhelma

I wanted to save this post from my trip to the Wilhelma, the zoological-botanical garden in Stuttgart, for the cold season. The last time that I have seen Wilhelma was as a little school kid and of course I had nearly no memory of that visit. It's nearly a shame that it took such a long time to see it again!

So I spontaneously used one of my husband's business trips to Stuttgart to join him on the trip and spent the waiting time there.

Whoever still plans for this year a spring or summer trip, I can highly recommend Wilhelma. There you can discover a lot of interesting things concerning  the animal and plant world. But check the website of Wilhelma beforehand, after that you will walk with different eyes through this unique garden.

Jetzt gibt's erstmal einen kurzen historischen Abriß:
First a short historical brief:

Originally Wilhelma was built in the middle of the 19th century as a private garden with buildings in the Moorish architecture for King William I. from Württemberg. At that time the Moorish architecture was in fashion. A parade example for this style , also up today, is the Alhambra in the Spanish Granada. In 1846 was its opening ceremony on the occasion of William's wedding with the czarevna Olga Nikolajewna (by the way also a very interesting lady).

In 1919 Wilhelma was opened for the public as a botanical show garden. After 1945 the zoological part has been developed. In 1952 you could see in Stuttgart the first zoological-botanical garden of Germany. Since that time Wilhelma is constantly renovated, new built or enlarged, especially the zoological garden. Particularly to mention is here the 2013 opened ape house for African apes (gorillas and bonobos) and the gorilla breeding station.

As I also have seen last year the zoo in Nuremberg (see also here and here) I left most of the animals more or less alone and opened myself more to the botanical part.

I really liked the entrance area with the colonnade and the coloration of the border of flowers which grows in front of it. In the back you can see the entrance pavilion.

But I do had to go in the insectarium, the Amazonia house and in the butterfly room to take some pictures of funny animals.

In the butterfly house I could marvel very close at the short-tailed fruit bat.

However it was nearly impossible to take pictures from the free flying around butterflies.

Jetzt geht's ins Aquarium!
Let's go to the Aquarium!

Die historische Gartenanlage
The historical gardens

I will concentrate on this garden part of Wilhelma because it impressed me the most. You will soon see why.

The buildings are, as I already mentioned, built in the Moorish architecture, the gardens itself in the traditional Italian garden art: There are main and side axis and a three-step terracing. There is  also a lime and plane tree alley.

From end of March on you can gaze in the Moorish garden the biggest magnolias groove of Europe north of the Alps. 70 trees will start to bloom. Also many shrub peonies grow here.

As King William I. wanted to walk through his Wilhelma without getting his feet wet, many colonnades were built.

The water lily pond is located in the center. Since 1956 tropical water lilies and Indian lotus are cultivated in summer in a heated basin. Their bloom takes place between May and October.

In August the water lily and lotus pond looked gorgeous! I would have liked to sit here on a bench for the rest of the day. But I was still curious what else has Wilhelma to offer.

Behind the pond stands the Moorish country house with greenhouses right and left of it. At the times of the king it was a residential building.

Am Teichrand entlang wächst die Lotosblume.
At the edge of the pond grows the Indian lotus.

By the way the water lilies with the floating leaves as big as a cartwheels are called Victoria amazonica and Victoria cruziana.

I keep going direction greenhouses up to the terraces.

By the way the gardeners were always in action.

Inside the Moorish country house you will find five self-contained plant houses with tropical and subtropical plants.

Right now I'm standing on one of the suctropic terraces and take pictures around me from the colourful pot plant world.

View to the Belvedere pavillion, the most beautiful view point of Wilhelma

My little tour through a part of the Wilhelma finishes here.
Maybe some of you have already seen it and liked it as much as me. And everybody else is certainly now in the mood to visit it, right?
